Type of project:  Research projects to stimulate the formation of young independent research teams – TE Code: 277 Title: RESEARCH ON EPIDEMIOLOGY, DIAGNOSIS AND CONTROL OF THE DOGS HEMOPARASITOSIS Acronym: Hemoparacan Financed by Executive Unit for Financing Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation  (UEFISCDI) Approved the 2010-2013 Budget: 692536 lei Summary of the project: DISEASES CAUSED BY HAEMOPARASITES ARE WIDESPREAD ACROSS THE GLOBE, AS WELL AS THEIR VECTORS, PRODUCING NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON ANIMAL HEALTH. HAEMOPARASITOSES IN HUMANS ALSO CAUSES IMPORTANT HEALTH PROBLEMS. AMONG MANY PARASITES LOCALIZED IN BLOOD OF ANIMALS, WORLDWIDE, THE MOST FREQUENTLY DIAGNOSED BELONG TO THE GENERA ANAPLASMA, BABESIA, CYTAUXZOON, DIROFILARIA, EHRLICHIA, HEMOBARTONELLA, HEMOPROTEUS, LEUKOCYTOZOON SI TRYPANOSOMA THIS PROJECT AIM IS TO PERFORM AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SCREENING OF BLOOD PARASITES IN DOGS FROM SOUTH WESTERN AND WESTERN ROMANIA, AND ASSESSMENT OF PATHOGENICITY, MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION METHODS OF SPECIES AND GENOTYPES IDENTIFIED AND ELABORATION OF A CONTROL PROGRAM. THE THEME PROPOSED INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING GENERAL OBJECTIVES: CONTRIBUTION TO THE SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN BLOOD PARASITES IN DOGS IN SOUTH WESTERN AND WESTERN ROMANIA, KNOWLEDGE OF HAEMOPARASITOSES EPIDEMIOLOGY, THEIR IMPLICATIONS ON ANIMAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH; UPDATING KNOWLEDGE AND DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES APPLIED IN HAEMOPARASITOSES, TRAINING OF SPECIALISTS FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF DIFFERENT DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES FOR BLOOD PARASITES IDENTIFICATION IN CURRENT MEDICAL PRACTICE AND RESEARCH, IMPLEMENTATION OF VARIOUS METHODS OF TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF THESE PARAZITOSES AND THEIR APPLICATION WISELY AND EFFECTIVELY IN AN INTEGRATED CONTROL PROGRAM. SINCE THE UNIVERSE OF HAEMOPARASITES IS CONTINUOUSLY EXPANDING, THIS PROJECT WILL BRING MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO DETERMINING THE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF BLOOD PARASITES, ACCORDING TO RESEARCH WORLDWIDE.

Objectives

The project have following general objectives: Contribution to the scientific knowledge of the main blood parasites in dogs in South Western and Western Romania; Knowledge of haemoparasitoses epidemiology, their implications on animal and public health; Updating knowledge and diagnostic techniques applied in haemoparasitoses, Training of specialists for implementation of different diagnostic techniques for blood parasites …
